How to Apply
College applications can be confusing. Below, we've answered some of the most common questions when applying to college, including how the application process works!
-
There is no set deadline for college applications, but instead it is a ‘first-come-first serve’ basis so once the spaces fill up, you could be put onto a waiting list. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible, most courses for college open in January for the August start of that year.
-
You can apply for as many colleges or as many courses are you like, there is no limit. We would suggest you make 3 or 4 applications so you have a few choices as a back-up.
-
You will find the application form on the college website themselves, you will apply direct to the college for that specific course.
-
Most application forms look similar and generally include course choices, mode of study, personal details, qualifications, employment history, reference, personal statement.
-
This is where you explain to the college why you are applying for this course and why you would be a suitable candidate for the course. Have a look at our tips on writing a College Personal Statement, for what to include and how to start writing this.
-
You would include your National exams and Higher exams that you have completed already, and then include the exams you are currently sitting. Sometimes the college will ask for a predicted grade for the exams you are yet to sit.
-
You can track your college application online, but usually if you meet the requirements you will be invited to an interview. You can prepare for this by reading our advice on College Interviews. After you have completed your interview there are 4 outcomes- unconditional offer (you have met the requirements already so the college place is yours), conditional offer (if you achieve the results you need by the end of the school year then you will get a place on the course), course is full (the spaces on the course are full but you will be put on the waiting list in case another student withdraws), unsuccessful (the college has decided not to offer you a place). Remember to contact the college to accept or reject the offer they have given you.
-
Wait for all the colleges to get back to you, some colleges get back sooner than others. We encourage you to contact the college who will be happy to help look into alternative routes, for example; NC instead of HNC.
